Job is een persoon uit het gelijknamige bijbelboek uit het Oude Testament. Het is een verzonnen personage dat leeft in de streek Us, ten zuiden van de Dode Zee. Hij heeft alles: hij is rijk, succesvol, gezond en zeer gelovig in God. Het verhaal over Job begint in de hemel, waar God een gesprek heeft met de Verleider (de Duivel). De Verleider daagt God uit en zegt dat het geen kunst is dat Job zo in Hem gelooft, omdat hij alles heeft wat zijn hart begeert. Maar de Verleider stelt: neem hem al zijn rijkdommen af, en dit zal veranderen.

God geeft de Verleider (de Duivel) de vrije hand en Job verliest al zijn rijkdommen. Hij raakt zijn kinderen, vee, bezittingen en aanzien kwijt en belandt uiteindelijk, met zijn lijf bedekt met zweren en puisten, op de mesthoop. Zelfs zijn vrouw en vrienden keren zich tegen hem. Ondanks al deze beproevingen blijft Job trouw aan God. Uiteindelijk beloont God hem voor zijn standvastigheid: hij krijgt al zijn bezittingen terug en de Verleider (de Duivel) heeft verloren.

Job op de mesthoop is ook een merknaam die in de 18e eeuw door verschillende pijpenmakers in Gouda werd gebruikt. Door een toevalligheid – bijvoorbeeld doordat de pijp beschadigd uit de mal kwam – of door een bewuste ingreep van de pijpenmaker, zijn de personages uit het hierboven beschreven verhaal omgewisseld. In deze versie is de Duivel op de mesthoop beland. Met wat fantasie lijkt het zelfs alsof hij de Satansster (het pentagram) in zijn handen houdt.

Job on the Ash Heap

Job is a character from the biblical book of the same name in the Old Testament. He is a fictional figure who lived in the land of Uz, south of the Dead Sea. Job had everything: he was wealthy, successful, healthy, and deeply faithful to God.

The story begins in heaven, where God has a conversation with the Tempter (the Devil). The Tempter challenges God, claiming that Job’s faith is only strong because he has everything his heart desires. He argues, “Take away all his wealth, and he will surely turn away from You.”

God gives the Tempter free rein, and Job loses all his possessions. He is stripped of his children, livestock, wealth, and status, and eventually ends up on the ash heap, his body covered in sores and boils. Even his wife and friends turn against him. Yet, despite all these trials, Job remains faithful to God. In the end, God rewards him for his steadfastness by restoring all his possessions, and the Tempter is defeated.

Job on the Ash Heap was also a brand name used by various pipe makers in Gouda in the 18th century. Due to either an accident—such as a pipe being damaged during the molding process—or a deliberate decision by the pipe maker, the characters from the biblical story were sometimes reversed. In this version, it is the Devil who ends up on the ash heap. With a bit of imagination, it even appears as though he is holding the pentagram, the symbol often associated with Satan.
