Het zeldzame merk Uil op de keik
In dit artikeltje tonen we een trechtervormig pijpje met een minder algemeen voorkomend reliëfmerk, de uil op de krik, zoals weergegeven in afbeelding 1. Voor zover bekend is dit merk uitsluitend gebruikt door de Goudse pijpenmaker Abraham Mallegom, vanaf 1714, en later door zijn weduwe.
Abraham Mallegom en zijn weduwe zijn nog enkele jaren als pijpenmakers werkzaam geweest. Vanaf 1740 zijn pijpen bekend met als bijmerk het wapen van Gouda, met daarboven de letter S. Dit bijmerk komt voor op pijpen uit de periode waarin Abraham Mallegom nog werkzaam was. Abraham Mallegom was tot 1749 als pijpenmaker werkzaam en zijn weduwe nog tot in 1750.

Op afbeelding 2 is een trechtervormig pijpje afgebeeld met het hielmerk ‘Uil op de krik’, dat omstreeks 1730 kan worden gedateerd.

In this article, we present a funnel-shaped pipe with a less commonly occurring relief mark, the Owl on the Crutch, as shown in Figure 1. As far as is known, this mark was used exclusively by the Gouda pipe maker Abraham Mallegom, from 1714 onwards, and later by his widow.
Abraham Mallegom and his widow continued to work as pipe makers for several years. From around 1740 onwards, pipes are known bearing the coat of arms of Gouda as a secondary mark, with the letter S above it. This secondary mark occurs on pipes from the period when Abraham Mallegom was still active as a pipe maker. Abraham Mallegom continued working until 1749, while his widow remained active until 1750.
In Figure 2, a funnel-shaped pipe is shown bearing the heel mark ‘Owl on the Crutch’, which can be dated to around 1730.
